Medici e Speziali - Pot Pourri
Description and history
Pot pourri composed of petals and dried flowers immersed in essence. To be placed in a tray to decorate and perfume rooms or in small bags to be stored in wardrobes and drawers.
Drugs and spices scattered on marble table tops ready to be mixed; pestles for crushing them to release a sophisticated and peppery fragrance.
Arte dei Medici e Speziali, 1349. The old doctors (medici) practised medicine and surgery, prepared the medicines to administer to patients and were also profound philosophy scholars. The pharmacists (speziali) on the other hand, obtained and sold the herbs, drugs and spices needed to prepare medicines. They also traded in perfumes and essences, as well as painters’ colours. The guild’s patroness was the Madonna.
